Section 1 -CHRONOLOGY
1875 John Buchan was born at Perth on 26th August. His father also John Buchan (1847-1911) was a Minister in the Free Church of Scotland. His mother was Helen Masterton from Broughton (1857-1937).In November 1875 the family moved to Pathhead in Fife
1888 Buchan family moved to Glasgow.
1888-92 At Hutchesons' Grammar School.
1892-95 Scholarship to Glasgow University - studied Classics.
1895-99 At Brasenose College, Oxford. First in Greats.
1898 Stanhope Essay prize.
1898 Newdigate Prize for Poetry.
1899-01 In London, worked on Spectator, and reading for the Bar.
1901 Called to the Bar.
1901-03 Assistant Secretary to Lord Milner in South Africa.
1903-06 Work on the Spectator and at the Bar.
1907 Married Susan Grosvenor. Partner in Thomas Nelson & Son.
1911 Adopted as Unionist candidate for Peebles and Selkirk.
1915 On staff of Times in Western Front.
1916 Major, Intelligence Corps, attached to G.H.Q., France. Work for Foreign Office.
1917 Operation for duodenal ulcer. Director of Information.
1918 Lt. Col. Director of Intelligence, Ministry of Information.
1919 Director of Reuter's. Bought Elsfield Manor, Oxford.
1923 Deputy Chairman, Reuter's.
1923 President of the Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Club.
1924 Visit to Canada and United States.
1927-35 Member of Parliament for the Scottish Universities
1928 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Biographies - Montrose.
1929 Resigned from Nelson's
1929-33 President of the Scottish History Society.
1931 First President of the Upper Tweeddale Branch of The British Legion.
1932 Given the Freedom of Selkirk (Centenary of the death of Sir Walter Scott.)
1933 Given the Freedom of the City of Perth (Birthplace)
1933 & 34 High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
1935 Given the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh.
1935 Created First Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield. Governor General of Canada.
1937 Trip to the Arctic via the Mackenzie River.
1936 - 1939 Chancellor of Edinburgh University.
1939 Visted the USA for talks with President Roosevelt.
1940 Died in the Neurological Institute, Montreal, on 11th February. Lay in State in the Senate Chamber, Ottowa. Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey. Ashes buried in Elsfield Churchyard near Oxford.
