*   Margaret Hope (1795-1860)

It would be nice to think that Loch Hope referred to that magical stretch of water beside Ben Hope on the North coast of Scotland but the truth is more mundane.   The only time that the name of Margaret Hope appears with the middle name of Loch is on the Hope family headstones in Tweedsmuir Kirkyard.   Here the wording is rather strange as Margaret is not indicated as a daughter of William and Helen but as the wife of his godson James Lindsay.   This would appear to be an obtuse way of trying to slightly distance Margaret from the Hope family and imply a connection with the Loch family that owned Hawkshaw farm where William was the tenant farmer.   The headstone wording along with the fact that the birth of Margaret was not registered unlike her four elder siblings indicates to me that Margaret was probably  illegitimate.   Every other document featuring Margaret (as Margaret Martin) does not show the middle name of Loch, these documents include the Death Certificates of her Lindsay children, 1841 and 1851 censuses in Scotland, and finally the memorial stained glass window in Tweedsmuir Parish Kirk.     

The wording on the stained glass memorial window in Tweedsmuir Parish Kirk is as follows:- To the Glory of God and in Memory of John Martin and Margaret Hope, Long Time Residents of this Parish.   Erected by their son John Hope Martin, Chicago, USA.   I cannot find any record of Margaret having a son named John Hope Martin but she did have a grandson, son of  William Martin, who was a John H Martin.   I think that it is an error on the window inscription!  An extraordinary thing about the window is that it is only about ten feet away from the Hope family headstones outside in the Kirkyard!    How did John Hope Martin manage that?
