TWEEDSMUIR PARISH HISTORY.

Frasers and the Declaration of Arbroath.

Alexander Fraser, Chamberlain of Scotland and ancestor of the chiefly line of Clan Fraser was killed at the battle of Dupplin in 1332.   See family chart on Frasers of Oliver page.  He was a signatory of the Declaration of Arbroath issued at Arbroath Abbey on 6th April 1320. Originally there would have been about fifty seals  attached to the Declaration of which only nineteen survive.   One of the surviving seals is that of Alexander Fraser that shows him in full armour mounted on a horse with his shield displaying six cinquefoils 3,2 and 1.(1)(2). However, Laing(3) has only three cinquefoils.  Image of the Declaration above and description of armorial below - Macdonald.    The 700th anniversary of the Declaration will be celebrated in 2020 and the Declaration will be on display at the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh at this time. (Due to the Covid 19 Pendemic the 700th aniversary functions have been cancelled but will take place on 6th April 2021,)
